Ellensburg is the home of Central Washington University (CWU). The surrounding Kittitas Valley is internationally known for the timothy hay that it produces. There are several local hay brokering and processing operations that ship to Pacific Rim countries.
The old part of the town is fairly historic, with old brick buildings from the late 19th century. Eastern Washington has a much drier climate than Western Washington, and some Seattle-area residents visit the area to spend a weekend without rain; many former Puget Sounds residents have moved to the city and commute over Snoqualmie Pass on I-90 to jobs located in the Puget Sound region.
Ellensburg is also a stop on the PRCA professional rodeo circuit. The town is also noted for being the birthplace of rock singer Mark Lanegan.
Central Washington University, or CWU, is an accredited four-year educational institution located in Ellensburg, Washington in the United States. The university originally opened in the late 19th century as a teacher's college, which is still one of the primary majors taken there. Central Washington University is located about 30 miles (50 km) north of Yakima, Washington on Interstate 82, and 110 miles (180 km) east-southeast of Seattle, Washington on Interstate 90.
The Western Art Association (WAA) was formed in 1972 to promote interest in western art, artifacts and to preserve our unique western heritage. Thanks to its dedicated board members and the WAA membership, this non-profit corporation has remained alive and healthy for over 30 years. The Association views the Ellensburg National Art Show & Auction as their primary annual event. Hundreds of community volunteers rally to make this weekend an enjoyable success for all.
The Clymer Museum of Art hosts the permanent collection of John Ford Clymer, an important American Artist. His work spanned many decades and was broad in its range. He created advertising for some of America's best and brightest corporations, as well as illustrating covers for America's beloved Saturday Evening Post and Look magazines. His historically accurate paintings of American frontier life are full of detail and meticulously researched, providing us a virtual window to the past.
